I am the Founder of AN EYE FOR ART, LLC. I am an independent art advisor, and avid art collector. Since founding my company, I have assisted both corporate and individual clients with art acquisitions.
Recent projects include the coordination and placement of a major commissioned portrait for an important think-tank (where I worked directly with artists Derek Fordjour, Tim Okamura and Lava Thomas, who each submitted a proposal for consideration); I am currently working on another commissioned project for a private-label wine company where I am leveraging my artist contacts for the label design of a commemorative Kamala Harris wine release.
For my individual collector clients, I have placed important pieces by artists such as Radcliffe Bailey.
I am affiliated with San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) - I am an official “MoAD Ambassador” and have served on their Afropolitan Ball Gala Host Committee. I am also a member of ArtTable (the foremost professional organization dedicated to advancing the leadership of women in the visual arts) and the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA).
I regularly attend the major art fairs with VIP entry for priority exhibition access in order to better serve my clients by providing them a “first-look” at available artwork. These fairs include the Armory Show in NYC, Zonamaco in Mexico City, EXPO Chicago, Art Basel Miami, Pulse Miami, Untitled San Francisco & Miami, PArC in Lima, Peru, Frieze Fairs, FOG Design + Art, among others. My artwork reflects images of African-American life and culture using colorful textiles as a medium. Each one-of-a-kind fabric collage is created using a combination of quilting techniques, as well as embellishments that enhance the overall image. The hand-stitched backgrounds are a tribute to the generations of women quilt makers in my family who came before me. I use the images of my original artwork on notecards, open stock prints, signed limited edition prints and other products.
Although I loved to draw and paint as a child, I did not grow up in an environment where that type of creativity was nurtured. I had very little exposure to visual art and few resources for exploring my early interest in the subject. So I chose to focus my energies on academic pursuits where I got lots of support and positive reinforcement. This path led me to get a Harvard M.B.A. and a successful career as a corporate marketing executive for over 25 years. My "Second Act" was as a non-profit CEO, where I spent 8 years leading one of the largest Girl Scout Councils in the United States before retiring in October 2015.
During my working years, I channeled my creative energies into hobbies like sewing, interior design, photography, cake decorating and scrapbooking. I also became an avid collector of African-American art, with a strong appreciation for images that reflect positive aspects of our life and culture. With the luxury of time afforded by retirement, I began looking for a new outlet for my creativity. For the first time in my life, I decided to try my hand at making art of my own.
Since I have always loved working with fabrics, it was fairly easy to decide that was the medium I wanted to create in. It was a lot harder to figure out how to translate the designs in my head into fabric images. With practice, I began to find my artistic voice and produce work that I wanted to share with others. I have finally arrived at a place where I am ready for my "Third Act" as an artist. The proud mother of an HBCU graduate, I am excited about using my artwork as a platform to raise funds to support these important educational institutions. I invite you to join me on this journey!
